EU Lawmakers on the Move: Targeting ChatGPT

Date:

EU lawmakers have promised to establish guidelines for tackling powerful AI systems such as ChatGPT in an open letter. The letter, signed by AI Act rapporteurs Brando Benifei and DragoÈ™ Tudorache and ten MEPs, pledges to ensure that advancements in artificial intelligence uphold a human-centric, safe, and trustworthy approach. The MEPs have also called upon the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and US President Joe Biden to organize a global summit concerning AI principles which would be drafted by the EU-US bilateral Trade and Technology Council.

The sudden rise of chatbot technology like OpenAI’s ChatGPT has left many feeling uneasy due to the lack of regulation and its potential to churn out disinformation. This has caused data protection authorities to raise the alarm and led to a temporary ban in Italy, as well as the creation of a ChatGPT task force at the EU level. In response, a letter was recently published by the Future of Life Institute (FLI) and signed by tech entrepreneurs like Elon Musk, who called for a six-month suspension of further AI advancement. The MEPs referred to this letter in their own, citing their agreement with the core message to take seriously the rapid evolution regarding powerful AI.

OpenAI is a San Francisco-based research laboratory conducted by a team of leading researchers, engineers, and business professionals who are united in their mission to ensure powerful AI is used responsibly and ethically. Founded by tech entrepreneurs and leaders such as Elon Musk and Sam Altman, OpenAI has created ChatGPT, a natural language processing system using deep learning to generate text.
