German automotive group, Volkswagen, has announced that it will be integrating the AI-based ChatGPT chatbot into its IDA voice assistant in certain vehicle models, as confirmed at the CES 2024 trade show in Las Vegas. This integration will initially be available in the current MEB and MQB EVO-based models, allowing customers to access the growing AI database and receive researched content read out to them while driving. The integration will be offered in conjunction with the latest infotainment systems in models such as the ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, Tiguan, Passat, and Golf. The IDA voice assistant can control various functions such as infotainment, navigation, air conditioning, and provide general knowledge answers through intuitive conversation. Volkswagen emphasizes that no new accounts, apps, or activations are required for ChatGPT integration, as the voice assistant is activated by saying ‘Hello IDA’ or pressing a button on the steering wheel. Data protection is also a priority, with questions and answers being deleted immediately to ensure a high level of security. While there is no information about the introduction of this feature in India, the ID.4 EV is expected to launch in the country based on the MEB platform.
