Volkswagen, in collaboration with Cerence, is set to integrate ChatGPT into its vehicles, enhancing data protection and AI accessibility for users. The announcement confirms that the integration will be unveiled at the 2024 CES show in Las Vegas. ChatGPT can be accessed by users through a voice command or the steering wheel button, using the phrase Hello IDA.
To prioritize data privacy, Volkswagen assures that ChatGPT does not have access to any vehicle-specific information. All queries and responses are promptly deleted to ensure heightened data protection. To deliver accurate and relevant information, Volkswagen utilizes Cerence Chat Pro, which combines various sources including ChatGPT. This integration prioritizes security and seamless user experience.
Kai Grünitz, Member of the Board of Management at Volkswagen Brand for Technical Development, expressed Volkswagen’s pride in being the first volume manufacturer to offer this innovative technology as a standard feature in vehicles from the compact segment and above. The collaboration with Cerence enables Volkswagen drivers to have direct access to the AI-based research tool, providing added value during their driving experience.
Stefan Ortmanns, CEO of Cerence, highlighted the partnership’s goal of delivering new innovations to Volkswagen customers, leveraging generative AI and large language models even after the vehicle has been purchased. Cerence Chat Pro empowers Volkswagen with an automotive-grade ChatGPT integration that offers flexibility, customization, and ease of deployment. The collaboration between Volkswagen and Cerence extends further, as they plan to design a new user experience based on large language models as the foundation for Volkswagen’s next-generation in-car assistant.
It’s important to note that Volkswagen is not the only automaker incorporating ChatGPT into their vehicles. Mercedes-Benz, for example, already integrated ChatGPT into its MBUX infotainment system, starting with a beta testing program in the United States. Over 900,000 vehicle owners equipped with MBUX were invited to participate in exploring the system’s enhanced capabilities.
Volkswagen’s partnership with Cerence demonstrates its commitment to providing advanced technology features while prioritizing data protection and user security. By integrating ChatGPT into their vehicles, Volkswagen aims to enhance the driving experience and strengthen its position in the market.
