atNorth Partners with Crusoe Energy for Clean-Powered Cloud GPUs in Iceland

Date:

atNorth, a prominent Nordic colocation, High-Performance Computing (HPC), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) service provider, has recently announced a strategic partnership with Crusoe Energy Systems LLC (Crusoe). The collaboration will involve the colocation of Crusoe Cloud Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) in atNorth’s ICE02 data center located in Iceland. This groundbreaking project marks Crusoe’s first foray into Europe and is a significant step towards their mission of combining computing prowess with climate-conscious practices by powering their HPC infrastructure with clean energy sources.

Crusoe’s Co-founder and President, Cully Cavness, expressed excitement about this venture, stating, I’m thrilled that our quest to source low carbon power has led us to Iceland. This partnership with atNorth allows us to bring the concentrated energy demand of compute infrastructure directly to the source of clean, renewable geothermal and hydro energy. The collaboration aligns perfectly with atNorth’s sustainability approach. According to Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, CEO of atNorth, It is very important to atNorth that we are collaborating with companies that share our approach to sustainability. Crusoe’s commitment to maximizing their compute while minimizing their environmental impact made them a perfect fit.

atNorth’s ICE02 site is equipped with a robust power infrastructure capable of harnessing over 80MW of electricity derived from sustainable geothermal and hydro energy sources in Iceland. Additionally, the country boasts low latency networks and reliable connectivity to customer bases across North America and Europe, facilitated by multiple undersea fiber optic cables.

The demand for data centers is growing exponentially due to the increasing prominence of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). Chris Dolan, Crusoe’s Chief Data Center Officer, shared his enthusiasm about the collaboration and the potential for future expansion: We’re excited about our initial commitment to atNorth and look forward to potentially expanding capacity even more in the future.
