Recently, Open AI’s CEO and co-founder, Sam Altman, was quick to react to Elon Musk’s recent venture X dot AI. Musk, who is famously opposed to AI development, had concerns about Open AI’s ChatGPT’s latest iteration and the Microsoft’s investment in OpenAI. As if to respond to these concerns, the billionaire launched his own AI venture X dot AI, in Nevada on March 9th, 2023. However, Sam Altman’s reaction to the news was not fully aligned with the views of the brightest minds in the AI industry.
Recently, the Future of Life Institute released an open letter calling for a pause in the development of AI across all industry labs. The letter was signed by many luminaries like Steve Wozniak, Yuval Noval Harari and policy makers, along a 7 policies to regulate AI development, including of certification and third party auditing. The letter urged for an immediate halt for the next 6 months on all sorts of development more powerful than ChatGPT-4. However, when probed in a MIT event, Sam Altman was not in agreement with the signatories of the letter. Altman mentioned that the letter lacked important technical nuances and he could not agree with the parts of the pause. He however mentioned that there have been no works on ChatGPT-5.
The reactions on Twitter to Sam Altman’s reaction to Elon Musk’s takeover of the AI industry were mixed. Musk has been a known critic of OpenAI, having earlier questioned its integrity of turning into a for-profit venture. Although he himself has invested in OpenAI, his ‘concerning’ attitude over AI had led him to launch his own AI project. And for now, it looks like the disagreeing visions between Musk and Altman will continue.
At OpenAI, Sam Altman leads a team of cutting-edge technology researchers and developers. Their mission is to develop a beneficial AI which works in coherence with humanity by developing human-compatible algorithms that take into account people’s safety and privacy. With past investments from investors like Tesla and Alphabet, OpenAI is one of the most well-known AI companies.
Elon Musk, the founder of tech companies Tesla and SpaceX, has been a notable investor in OpenAI. Despite the disagreements between him and Sam Altman, the billionaire has launched his own venture X dot AI to take on AI development with his own approach. He is known for his strong opinion of the potential threats of AI and his belief of it being more powerful than human cognition. Musk’s stable of tech companies continues to revolutionize industries like travel with his electric car and space exploration.
