Ola’s CEO Launches Krutrim, an India-Centric AI Startup

Date:

The CEO of Ola, an Indian ride-hailing app that rivals Uber, has launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) startup with the aim of developing an India-centric AI system. Bhavish Aggarwal, the creator of Krutrim and CEO of Ola, stated that many of the existing AI models are rooted in Western culture and the English language, and there is a need for AI solutions that cater specifically to India’s diverse linguistic and cultural landscape.

Krutrim, designed exclusively for India, can comprehend and generate content in 10 of the country’s 22 official languages. The AI technology is intended for various applications, including business communications and education. The emergence of generative AI, which creates fresh text, video, image, and audio content, has garnered both advancements and controversy on a global scale. India stands to benefit significantly from fully utilizing generative AI technology, with projections suggesting a potential 5.9-7.2% increase in the country’s GDP.

While India has been adopting AI technology, several startups have emerged in the country, offering AI solutions. However, building a large language model (LLM) like ChatGPT on a large scale can be challenging and expensive. One of the main obstacles is the scarcity of qualified AI specialists in India. But despite the challenges, there is optimism about the advancements AI can bring to India, especially with growing government support and increased investment in AI research and development.

Deepika Loganathan, CEO of AI provider HaiVE Tech, highlights the importance of India-centric AI models to effectively address the country’s unique context. She emphasizes the need for comprehensive work in developing data sets that reflect India’s diversity and robust regulatory frameworks to oversee AI usage. A multifaceted approach involving public-private partnerships, infrastructure investment, AI education and training, and clear AI policies is necessary to tackle ethical, security, and employment concerns related to AI.

In summary, India is making concerted efforts to adapt AI technology locally in order to strengthen its digital economy. Startups like Krutrim are striving to build India-centric AI systems that cater to diverse linguistic and cultural traits. Despite challenges such as the shortage of AI specialists and the need for comprehensive regulatory frameworks, there is optimism about the advancements AI can bring to India.
