AI may begin war, increase nuclear arsenal, warns ex-Google engineer Blake Lemoine
AI pioneer Blake Lemoine has issued a stark warning about the potential dangers associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI). Lemoine, an ex-Google engineer who was controversially fired after claiming Google’s LaMDA system had feelings, has expressed concerns that AI could be harnessed to enhance nuclear weapons and even initiate warfare.
In an interview with ‘The Washington Times’, Lemoine spoke about the potential misuse of AI, stating, Using AI to solve political problems by sending a bullet into the opposition will become seductive, especially if it’s accurate. He further added, If you can kill one revolutionary thought leader and prevent a civil war while your hands are clean, you prevented a war. But that leads to ‘Minority Report’, and we don’t want to live in that world.
Lemoine drew parallels between the race for AI supremacy and the development of nuclear weapons, highlighting the fact that AI enables machines to perform complex tasks through advanced calculations and statistical analysis. He pointed out that unlike the apparent scarcity of well-protected nuclear weapons and limited resources of plutonium and uranium, open-source software models for AI do not rely on rare natural resources.

Despite his controversial reputation, Lemoine remains actively involved in the development of AI. He is currently overseeing a project called MIMIO.ai, which involves creating a personality engine. Regarding China’s progress in this field, Lemoine revealed that MIMIO.ai intends to avoid entering the Chinese market. However, he believes that his ideas have influenced certain developers at Google, even if they don’t necessarily align with all of his beliefs or opinions.
