According to the economic survey, the ratio has increased across different levels, but it still falls short compared to countries like the USA, Denmark, Finland, and China. A smaller student-teacher ratio allows for a more personalized learning experience, which is proven to be effective and engaging.
In recent times, generative AI and chatbots like ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and Microsoft’s Bing have emerged as a boon for teachers. These tools enable educators to create personalized and interactive assignments, catering to the specific needs of each student in a shorter time. With high pupil-teacher ratios and administrative responsibilities, teachers have less time for student interaction and support, affecting the overall learning experience.
To alleviate this burden, automation tools like ChatGPT can handle various administrative tasks. ChatGPT’s Code Interpreter, for example, can assist with data visualization, dataset cleaning, file management, and basic mathematical calculations, among other tasks that teachers often have to manage.
Initially, ChatGPT faced opposition from faculty and teachers due to concerns about plagiarism. However, in recent months, perceptions have changed, and the platform is being used more effectively. Education-based chatbots now allow students to conduct research work, leading to increased project-based learning. The introduction of immersive learning enables students to interact with computer versions of historical figures and fictional characters, making the classroom experience more enjoyable.
Moreover, students benefit from ChatGPT in areas such as translation, enhancing English writing skills, and practicing conversational skills. The rise of open-source large language models (LLMs) like Meta’s LLaMA and Llama 2 further expands the applications of chatbots in education and other fields.
The acceptance of ChatGPT reflects the typical trajectory of new technology in society. Initial criticism is gradually replaced by increasing integration and discovery of more effective use cases. As ChatGPT becomes more deeply integrated into our daily lives, its potential within the education sector is expected to expand.
