Fujitsu Leverages AI Technology to Realize Energy Saving in Network Operations
Fujitsu, a leading global technology company, has unveiled an innovative power-saving application for its Virtuora Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) offering, utilizing AI technology developed in-house. The application, called Fujitsu rApp, leverages machine learning and artificial intelligence to estimate network traffic and intelligently manage network capacity, resulting in significant energy savings.
In tests conducted in November 2023, Fujitsu confirmed power savings of over 20% compared to traditional methods for estimating communication traffic for individual base stations. The power-saving application uses AI-driven traffic estimates to dynamically switch network capacity on or off as needed, ensuring service continuity while optimizing energy consumption.
The interoperability tests also involved collaboration with VIAVI Solutions, an American telecommunications network measurement equipment vendor. Fujitsu successfully tested the Virtuora SMO offering equipped with RAN (Radio Access Network) equipment, confirming the compatibility and effectiveness of the power-saving application.
Fujitsu announced the successful results of the tests at the O-RAN ALLIANCE Global PlugFest Fall 2023, an international event promoting open and interoperable radio access networks. The company aims to support global telecommunication carriers in reducing operation and maintenance costs while accelerating the development of new services. Ultimately, Fujitsu aims to contribute to the realization of carbon-neutral network operations through power-saving technologies.
In terms of technical details, the power-saving application developed by Fujitsu incorporates AI technology for the estimation of communication traffic. By utilizing time series prediction technology, the application accurately predicts communication traffic in small areas based on the location distribution data of users and terminals, ensuring effective energy savings.
Fujitsu plans to further enhance the multi-vendor Open RAN ecosystem globally, promoting collaboration and compatibility among different vendors.
