Training in Interlingual Respeaking Enhances Cognitive Abilities of Language Professionals

Date:

A recent study published in Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence has revealed that language professionals can enhance their cognitive abilities through the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The study focused on Interlingual Respeaking (IRSP), a process that involves the collaboration of language professionals with speech recognition software to create live subtitles in another language. The research findings showcased significant improvements in executive functioning and working memory among participants who underwent a specialized training course. This training not only equips language professionals for the rapidly evolving AI-driven language industry but also highlights the important role of human-AI collaboration in enhancing cognitive abilities.

The 25-hour upskilling course on IRSP involved 51 language professionals and aimed to measure the effects of this new practice on cognition, particularly executive functioning and working memory. The results demonstrated that training in real-time human-AI interaction, such as IRSP, can boost the cognitive abilities of language professionals and provide them with an advantage in the ever-changing language industry.

Dr. Anna-Stiina Wallinheimo, a Research Fellow at CTS with expertise in Cognitive Psychology and Fellow of Surrey’s Institute for People-Centred AI, commented on the research findings, stating, Our research findings demonstrate that training in new forms of real-time human-AI interaction, such as Interlingual Respeaking, can enhance the cognitive abilities of language professionals, giving them an advantage in a quickly evolving industry.

Dr. Elena Davitti, Associate Professor at CTS and Principal Investigator of the project, emphasized the importance of continuous exploration and adaptation for language professionals in the face of AI-driven advancements in the field. She stated, The research provides valuable empirical insights into the cognitive demands of these complex practices, paving the way for enhanced approaches to upskilling.

The study sheds light on the cognitive benefits of human-AI collaboration in the language industry. The use of AI-related technologies, such as automatic speech recognition and machine translation, has become increasingly prevalent in the field. However, this research shows that instead of fearing AI, language professionals can harness its power to improve their working memory and task-switching abilities.

As AI continues to reshape the language industry, the findings of this study underscore the need for language professionals to continuously explore new forms of human-AI interaction and adapt to the evolving landscape. By embracing AI technologies, professionals can enhance their cognitive abilities and thrive in the rapidly changing industry.

In conclusion, the study highlights the cognitive advantages of utilizing AI in language-related practices. Language professionals can enhance their executive functioning and working memory through real-time collaboration with AI systems. As the language industry embraces AI-driven technologies, the findings of this research emphasize the crucial role of human-AI collaboration and the need for continuous adaptation and upskilling.
