Artificial intelligence (AI) powerhouse OpenAI has applied for trademarks for its future language models, GPT-6 and GPT-7, in China. The filings were made by OpenAI OpCo, the major entity of the Microsoft-backed start-up, and are currently under review by the Trademark Office of the China National Intellectual Property Administration. OpenAI, known for its popular ChatGPT application, has been continuously advancing the capabilities of its language models since the launch of ChatGPT last year. The company has also previously filed trademark applications for GPT-4, GPT-5, and Whisper in China, but none have been approved yet. OpenAI has not made any of its services available in China, including Hong Kong. The company has not commented on the trademark applications.
