Timnit Gebru, a renowned expert in artificial intelligence (AI), has declined an offer to join the OpenAI board, expressing a preference for returning to Google instead. Gebru, a well-known figure in the AI research field, hinted at the possibility of rejoining Google following her controversial exit.
While Gebru was suggested as a potential new member for the OpenAI board, she firmly rejected the idea, emphasizing the potential difficulties of being on the board. I just feel like the person on the board would have a horrible time because they will constantly be fighting an uphill battle, Gebru stated.
OpenAI, which recently witnessed the return of Sam Altman as CEO, introduced a new provisional board with plans to eventually expand it to nine members. This restructuring comes in the midst of a period marked by high drama and rapid developments at OpenAI, including rumors and allegations of Altman neglecting AI safety.
Gebru, who is 40 years old, has been leading the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute since leaving Google. During this time, she has been critical of AI companies, condemning them for overlooking significant issues stemming from AI technology.
