UK Turns to AI to Free Up Police, Teachers & Health Workers
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being embraced by the UK government to assist with administrative tasks, enabling police officers, teachers, and health workers to concentrate on front-line responsibilities. A recent government review revealed that teachers spend valuable time on administrative work, such as data input and daily reports, resulting in a daily waste of one working day. By reducing administrative workloads, police officers will have more time to combat crime effectively.
The forthcoming government report, to be included in the Autumn Statement next week, will emphasize the considerable potential to minimize daily administrative tasks and leverage AI technology to alleviate the burden on teachers and police officers, as well as help healthcare professionals treat patients more efficiently.
Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt, stated, Our public servants are among the best in the world, but we don’t help them or taxpayers when a day every week is wasted on admin. We must do better by cutting admin, preventing problems before they emerge, and safely introducing new technology like AI.
Governments worldwide are increasingly turning to AI to streamline operations and enhance productivity in public services, particularly due to rising costs and aging populations. In the UK, AI is already supporting doctors and nurses in treating stroke victims and assisting teachers in creating high-quality lesson plans.
By harnessing AI further, teachers’ workloads could potentially be reduced by up to five hours per week over three years. Moreover, implementing new technologies could save the country’s police force approximately 750,000 hours every week.
This report comes at a time when public opinion remains divided on the increased use of AI in the workplace. According to a survey conducted by the UK’s Office for National Statistics, 32% of working adults believe that AI could jeopardize their jobs, whereas 28% believe it could make their jobs easier. These differing perspectives highlight the ongoing debate surrounding the integration of AI into various industries.
