Media Council of Kenya Takes Action Against Unprofessional Social Media Use
The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has taken a firm stance against unprofessional social media use, emphasizing the importance of professionalism in journalism. At a recent workshop in Nanyuki, the council highlighted the need for objective reporting not only in traditional media platforms but also in the realm of social media and artificial intelligence (AI) use.
According to the Kenya News Agency, the MCK is actively working on guidelines to promote responsible and unbiased reporting across all media platforms. Addressing journalists and civil society representatives, the council’s CEO, David Omwoyo Bwire, stressed the significance of combating irresponsible practices on social media platforms.
The MCK’s upcoming guidelines will address issues such as irresponsible reporting and misuse of these platforms. This initiative is a response to the challenges posed by the rapidly evolving media landscape, where misinformation and disinformation are prevalent. The council’s focus extends beyond mere content regulation; it aims to empower media consumers as well.
Bwire emphasized the critical role of media and digital literacy in enabling the public to discern biases in media. He highlighted how media can be influenced by advertisers, owners, and journalists, urging Kenyans to become responsible consumers of media content and to understand the various biases that may exist.
Importantly, Bwire reassured the public that the media industry is not rogue but rather under strict oversight. He encouraged individuals whose rights have been violated by media content to report such instances to regulatory bodies instead of targeting individual journalists.
In addition, residents of Laikipia were encouraged to use social media spaces constructively. Suggestions included sharing local content, providing weather updates for farmers, and promoting peaceful coexistence and national values. This approach seeks to foster a responsible and beneficial use of media platforms at the community level.
The MCK’s proactive approach to combat unprofessional social media use is a step in the right direction. By developing guidelines and promoting media literacy, it aims to create a more informed and discerning audience while also holding the media accountable for their actions.
