NCC Commends Proposal to Train 3 Million Nigerians, Boosting Country’s Global Digital Skill Export
In an effort to transform Nigeria into a leading exporter of digital skills, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has applauded a proposal to train three million Nigerians over the next four years. The proposal, put forth by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, aims to increase Nigeria’s pool of technically skilled individuals and attract potential employers in the global market.
Speaking at a recent summit in Lagos, Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, emphasized the importance of embracing technological advancements and fostering innovation to promote sustainable growth and economic diversification in Nigeria. The vision is to position Nigeria as a global technical talent hub and a net exporter of talent. With over one million applicants already showing interest, the program is expected to significantly increase the level of digital and technical skills among Nigerians, particularly among young and middle-level talents, by the end of 2027.
Under the proposal, Nigeria aims to raise the digital literacy rate to 70% and rank in the top 25 percentile globally in key technology areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Internet of Things (IoT), Robotics, Blockchain, and Additive Manufacturing. These targets align with the strategic plan unveiled by the Honourable Minister and reflect the five pillars driving the Ministry’s policy direction: policy, infrastructure, innovation, entrepreneurship and capital, trade and knowledge.
The NCC remains committed to providing an enabling environment for the development of critical infrastructure to support a robust digital economy, ensuring improved broadband connectivity, and efficient spectrum resource management. Dr. Maida urged Nigerians and the media to engage with the initiatives outlined by the Ministry and stressed the importance of collaboration and partnerships in achieving these ambitious goals.
