In the social media era, AI technology has advanced enough to create images which have managed to fool even the most experienced user. Recently, on Reddit, hundreds of users have been scammed into believing that a nude image of an AI-generated woman called Claudia is real. Even more surprisingly, some of them invested money to purchase the fake images. OpenAI’s ChatGPT is the primary program behind such tactics – it is a product and not an AI research, revealed Yann LeCun, the Chief AI Scientist at Meta.
The source of the problem was a Reddit account. It soon turned out that two computer science students were behind Claudia – they created the fake account as an experiment to see if people can be tricked through AI technology. Although it can be described as a work of vandalism, it collected earnings over $100 (over Rs 8,100) from the images.
The account on Reddit has introduced new verification process to ensure that such scams are avoided in the future. News of fraudulent activities by AI reached the likes of Twitter, Instagram, OnlyFans etc., where creators started charging users for exclusive content. To ensure users’ safety and avoid confusion, platforms have started introducing verification criteria.
The Rolling Stone report stresses on being more aware and wiser when dealing with unknown sources. The collaboration between AI and modern visual designing technologies can cause serious damage as it will be hard for most people to identify which image is a product of AI. Therefore, it is necessary to stay cautious and take precautionary steps whenever possible.
