Elon Musk, the co-founder of Tesla and SpaceX, has registered a new advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-driven startup to rival OpenAI. The startup, called X.AI Corp, is registered under the British Virgin Islands with Musk as the only listed director in the filing. Musk’s family office director Jared Birchall is the company secretary.
The name of the company is inspired from Musk’s endeavor to create a one-stop ‘everything app.’ Codenamed as ‘X.AI’, the project was aborted in November 2022. To work on this new project, Musk has inducted intellectual experts, most notably Igor Babuschkin, an AI specialist from Alphabet Inc’s DeepMind. Reports suggest that Musk has been trying to hire more OpenAI employees for this lab but has only had limited success.
The tech field has become highly competitive, with multiple tech giants working fiercely to create new, more powerful, AI models. OpenAI recently launched their powerful GPT-4 model, with AI capabilities to handle user inquiries, understand, and sometimes even out-perform humans in some subjects such as the LSAT, and Bar exams.
X.AI Corp’s ultimate goal is unclear, but it’s speculated that the company is using its newly acquired resources to create a rivaling AI-driven chatbot, a chatbot similar to OpenAI’s popular ChatGPT released in November 2022. Clearly, with the massive support Musk is providing, this could be a groundbreaking venture.
At this point, it’s anyone’s guess what the long-term plan of X.AI Corp is, but it’s bound to be something revolutionary. With the competition heating up, we’re sure to witness some exciting new developments soon.
