Tech billionaire Elon Musk has recently joined the race for artificial intelligence (AI) and is reportedly building another startup to compete with the chatbot builder OpenAI. According to the Financial Times report, Elon Musk has already made contact with engineers, investors, and other AI experts to assemble a team dedicated to his new business.
The development is in light of an open letter, signed by numerous technology executives and AI researchers, including Elon Musk, that called for a pause in the speedy development of machine-learning systems more powerful than OpenAI’s ChatGPT 4. The letter warned of potential risks these frequently used AI systems may have on society.
A variety of tech companies have been trying to incorporate OpenAI’s increadibly powerful ChatGPT’s into their services and products, but many have raised concerns over possible privacy issues. As a result, regulators are asking that stricter guidelines be in place before potentially dangerous AI systems are widely used.
On this note, it was recently reported that Elon Musk obtained thousands of graphics processing units from electronics company Nvidia recently. Investors responded positively to the stock prices of the company on Friday after news of the new AI startup emerged.
In addition to this, a state filing from April this year revealed that Elon Musk is an employee or one of the founders of a startup named X.AI Corp. This company, incorporated in Nevada, is supposedly connected to Musk’s AI plans, as he is listed as the sole director and Jared Birchall, a managing director of a family office, is named secretary.
Finally, it is important to note that Elon Musk was a co-founder of OpenAI, which was launched in 2015. Although he eventually left the board of the company in 2018, he was integral to the success of OpenAI and the development of AI technology.
