Google has introduced a new tool called About this image to enhance its search results by providing users with a better understanding of the context and background information behind images. This tool was announced at Google’s I/O conference in May and is now available to English users worldwide.
The purpose of About this image is to give users an idea of where a particular image has appeared on the web in the past and how it has been described. Users can access this feature by clicking the three-dot menu in Google Search and Google Images results. Google already offers a similar feature called About this result for text-based sources.
When it comes to the origin of an image, About this image can display its metadata and provide vital context about how it has been described over time by news and fact-checking sites. Furthermore, the tool aims to disclose whether an image has been generated by AI or not.
Currently, Google is working on developing a way for users to check any image on the web, not just the ones in Google Search results. They plan to make this tool available through right-clicking or long-pressing an image in Chrome or by swiping up on the Google App when encountering an image of interest.
In addition to this image tool, Google continues to invest in its Fact Check Explorer. Although still in beta, this tool allows users to search for image fact-checks by uploading an image or using its URL. Google plans to release a new API to help fact-checkers and journalists integrate Fact Check Explorer into their workflows.
With the introduction of About this image and the ongoing development of the Fact Check Explorer, Google aims to provide users with more transparency and reliable information when searching for images and verifying their authenticity. These tools will contribute to a safer and more informative online experience for users globally.
