While some AI image-generators have mechanisms in place to block misuse, others, like the open-source Stable Diffusion developed by startup Stability AI, have been favored by producers of child sex abuse material.
Stability AI later introduced filters to block unsafe and inappropriate content and has explicitly prohibited any illegal or immoral uses of its software. However, older versions of Stable Diffusion remain accessible and have become the software of choice for those creating explicit content involving children.
The IWF’s report arrives ahead of a global AI safety gathering hosted by the British government, which aims to address the darker side of AI technology. The report sheds light on the urgent need for discussions and actions to tackle the growing problem of AI-generated child sexual abuse.
While multiple countries, including the US and UK, have laws banning the production and possession of such explicit images, their enforcement remains a challenge. Efforts must be made to ensure that openly available software cannot be used to create harmful content involving children.
