IB Middle Year Programme Trains Delhi Govt. School Teachers, Expanding Popularity of IB Curriculum Boosts Education Paradigm in India
In a promising development for education in India, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Year Programme (MYP) is gaining popularity, leading to increased opportunities for teachers and students alike. The IB Middle Year Programme recently conducted a training session for Delhi Government school teachers with support from the World Academy of Career Programmes (WACP) and the International Baccalaureate.
During the IBCP Confluence 2023, organized by WACP and the International Baccalaureate, it was revealed that schools implementing the IB curriculum have experienced a remarkable growth rate of over 300% in the past two years. This surge in popularity has paved the way for expansion, with the IB aiming to add 100 more Career-related Programme (CP) schools over the next five years. Notable cities of interest for this expansion include Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Bhubaneshwar.
At the IBCP conference, speakers highlighted the significance of the IB curriculum and its benefits for students:
1. Global Exposure and Cultural Diversity: The IB is an international board that provides students with access to global exposure and cultural diversity, enriching their education experience.
2. Skill-Based and Career-Focused: The IB curriculum continuously evolves to meet the skill requirements and career developments of students. It is designed to be less theoretical and more practical, with a research-based approach that fosters a deeper understanding of the subjects.
3. Assessment Methodology: Unlike traditional examinations, the middle years programme (class 10) of the IB curriculum does not involve formal examinations. This helps reduce stress and encourages holistic learning.
4. IB World Schools: Schools authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate curriculum are known as IB World Schools. These institutions follow a comprehensive and globally recognized educational framework.
The IB’s Career-related Programme has been launched in several leading schools across major Indian cities, including Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, and Coimbatore. This program equips Grade 11 and 12 students for their future careers or further study through a unique blend of academic study and career-related skills.
The collaboration between the IB and WACP aims to prepare students for the ever-evolving workforce, aligning with the vision of holistic, inquiry-based education outlined in the New Education Policy of 2020. The focus is on imparting a strong foundation in diverse career paths, empowering students and enabling them to thrive in the future.
Capt. Rohit Sen Bajaj, School Director of Pathways School in Gurgaon, highlighted the benefits of the IBCP programme in building students’ learning potential, cultivating a global mindset, and preparing them to become future leaders. He emphasized the importance of such programs in enabling students to work within a global community and create opportunities, ultimately strengthening the foundation of education in India.
The IB has been operating in India since 1976, offering a wide range of educational programs in collaboration with over 220 schools across major cities. Through partnerships with organizations like WACP, schools gain valuable insights into the distinctive CP qualification and its curriculum, which plays a crucial role in preparing students and teachers for the demands of the future workforce.
