Nordic data center services company atNorth is expanding into Denmark with the opening of a new state-of-the-art data center in Ballerup, Greater Copenhagen. The new site, called DEN01, is set to go live in the fourth quarter of 2024 after a 12-month construction period. With a capacity of 30MW, DEN01 will cater to high performance workloads and meet the increasing demand for cost-effective, high-performance computing services in the region.
DEN01 will be strategically located near waste and energy company Vestforbrænding, enabling it to benefit from Denmark’s cool climate and good connections to mainland Europe. This proximity will also allow the data center to utilize innovative heat re-use technology, which has the potential to supply heat to thousands of households in the Ballerup community once completed. The site will be ISO27001 and ISO14001 compliant, adhering to Tier 3 standards.
Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, CEO of atNorth, emphasized the company’s careful selection of data center locations that adhere to their stringent requirements for scalability and energy efficiency. He expressed his delight in investing in Denmark’s data center market and expanding their facilities to meet the growing demand for high-performance digital infrastructure.
Jesper Würtzen, Mayor of Ballerup, described Ballerup as an attractive municipality for businesses, with atNorth’s presence being a prime example. He expressed excitement about the project’s potential to reuse excess heat from the data center for sustainable district heating in the future.
Steen Neuchs Vedel, CEO of Vestforbrænding, emphasized their continuous efforts to utilize waste heat from organizations like data centers and integrate them into their district heating network. He expressed his happiness in being part of the project and working with atNorth to efficiently utilize waste heat from the new site to heat local homes.
The expansion into Denmark reflects atNorth’s substantial growth strategy and their commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability. With their data centers running on renewable energy resources and supporting circular economy principles, atNorth aims to provide long-term infrastructure and flexible colocation deployments that meet businesses’ computing needs in an efficient and cost-optimized way.
atNorth currently operates seven data centers across Iceland, Sweden, and Finland, with an eighth site set to open in Helsinki in the third quarter of 2024. Their expansion into Denmark marks their presence in four out of the five Nordic countries.
The move aligns with atNorth’s mission to offer sustainable, cost-effective, and scalable colocation and high-performance computing services across the Nordic region. With their tailored solutions, businesses can engage in tasks such as calculating, simulating, training, and visualizing data workloads.
