Queensland Schools Embrace AI for Tailored Education Programs
Ten state schools in Queensland, Australia, are set to launch a trial using artificial intelligence (AI) as a teaching tool. Students and teachers will utilize an adaptive learning platform called Cerego, which employs generative AI and machine learning to deliver personalized quiz-based education programs.
This technology marks a significant shift in the way students learn and teachers create lessons. Similar to the introduction of calculators and the internet, AI has the potential to revolutionize education. According to Education Minister Grace Grace, AI aims to save teachers time, reduce their workload, and offer an intuitive and user-friendly experience. However, concerns have been raised regarding the accuracy of open-sourced AI programs such as ChatGPT, which gathers data from the internet without considering its source or reliability. To address these concerns, Queensland state schools will not employ open-sourced AI but instead rely on a digitized version of the comprehensive curriculum used in the region.
Moreover, the government is implementing safeguards to protect individuals’ data. Privacy is of utmost importance, and measures are being taken to prevent the sale of private data, compromise academic integrity, or misuse AI to bully students or target teachers.
The trial will encompass students from years five to 12, covering a wide range of subjects including English, physics, science, health, humanities, and accounting. Its introduction follows a recent meeting of education ministers where the use of AI in schools was discussed in detail.
