Leading Experts Discuss Futuristic Transportation Technologies at UP.Summit
At the recent UP.Summit, business and political leaders gathered to discuss the transformative potential of futuristic transportation technologies. The event, held at the Perot family’s Circle T Ranch, attracted hundreds of investors eager to learn about the latest innovations in aviation, transportation, and defense.
Among the prominent figures in attendance were former President George W. Bush, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, and former Secretary of State and Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson. The summit aimed to attract entrepreneurs and stay ahead of emerging technologies.
One of the key topics discussed was the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in transportation. Ross Perot Jr., the leader of a large independent property portfolio, highlighted the potential of AI in managing safety in the airfield and improving battery efficiency. He also predicted the advent of self-driving trucks, especially in light of the current truck driver shortage.
Gatik, an autonomous trucking company, plans to deploy driverless trucks for freight transportation in Texas by 2024. Gautam Narang, the CEO and co-founder of Gatik, expressed confidence in the technology’s safety features and revealed plans for expanding operations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Texas has become a testing ground for numerous autonomous vehicle companies. Aurora and Kodiak Robotics are currently operating driverless trucks along Interstate 45, while Cruise, backed by major companies like General Motors and Walmart, is conducting tests for autonomous ride-hailing vehicles.
According to Perot, the next major development in transportation will be electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOLs), also known as air taxis. He predicted that in around 10 years, air taxis will become available, with the assistance of AI speeding up their development. However, Perot emphasized that safety remains a top priority for authorities like the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the introduction of fully autonomous air taxis may take longer.
Drones also featured prominently in discussions. Walmart recently announced the expansion of its drone delivery services in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, joining other stores already offering this service. Adam Woodworth, CEO of Google Wing, highlighted the challenge of building cost-efficient drones for widespread use in delivery operations.
The UP.Summit provided a platform for experts and industry leaders to explore the potential of futuristic transportation technologies. Ross Perot Jr. expressed optimism about the future and emphasized the importance of Texas and Fort Worth in attracting entrepreneurs and fostering business growth.
