Guyana Demonstrates Solidarity with Cuba, Calls for End of Unjust Embargo and Inclusion on State Sponsors of Terrorism List
Guyana, a nation in South America, has expressed its unwavering support for Cuba and called for an end to the unjust embargo imposed on the country. In a recent address delivered by Guyana’s representative at the Havana Summit of the Group of 77 and China, the nation displayed its solidarity with Cuba and emphasized the need to remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
During the summit, Guyana commended Cuba for its effective leadership of the Group of 77 and China, recognizing the country’s commitment to principles of solidarity, cooperation, and multilateralism. The theme of the summit, Current Development Challenges: the Role of Science, Technology and Innovation, was also lauded for its relevance in achieving sustainable development goals.
In its address, Guyana reaffirmed its dedication to the United Nations Charter and International Law as the foundation of multilateralism and international relations. However, the nation acknowledged the multitude of challenges faced by both people and the planet, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, ecological crises, an inequitable global economic and financial system, and escalating geopolitical tensions.
Despite these challenges, countries of the South have demonstrated resilience, ingenuity, and solidarity. Guyana urged for the fulfillment of international commitments, a reformed global financial architecture, a fair energy transition, a climate-resistant future, and a more democratic, just, and inclusive international order.
Science, technology, and innovation were identified as crucial tools for addressing various development challenges such as food security, poverty alleviation, energy security, healthcare, economic transformation, and climate change. Guyana emphasized the importance of technology transfer, the closure of the digital divide, and support for countries of the South in overcoming development obstacles.
Furthermore, Guyana expressed its support for initiatives like the Consortium on Science, Technology, and Innovation for the South (COSTIS) and commended the United Nations Secretary-General’s establishment of a Scientific Advisory Board to inform member states about scientific advancements and their benefits.
In line with its commitment to creating an enabling environment, Guyana is working towards digitization, incorporating STEM and coding into its education system, and developing its first smart city.
The outcome document of the Havana Summit recognizes the potential of technology and innovation in resolving trade-offs among the Sustainable Development Goals and accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. Guyana advocates for south-south, north-south, and triangular cooperation to promote continuity, connectivity, and digital inclusion, as well as multi-stakeholder partnerships to support STI initiatives through innovative and blended finance.
