Senate Leader Urges for Guidelines on Artificial Intelligence amid Increase in ChatGPT Popularity

Date:

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer declared on Thursday the launch of an initiative to set up laws on artificial intelligence, due to concerns that involve both national safety and education. This measure reflects a growing use of programs such as ChatGPT, which stands as the most used application by consumers in history, with over 100 million users monthly.

Schumer’s plan requires the approval of both the White House and Congress, so it could take a few more months in order to be fully implemented. The proposal seeks to proactively prevent possible catastrophes that could arise from the use of this transformative technology, by introducing the periodic review and testing of AI.

The legislator insisted that taking action rapidly is essential to prevent any damage to the national security and society in general, for which he proposed the drafting of bipartisan legislations. Schumer’s proposed framework would grant users access to the results of each of the tests.

The proposal from the Democratic politician comes soon after the Chinese government denounced their own set of guidelines to regulate AI on Wednesday. Schumer argued that the U.S. has the responsibility to shape the regulations that oversee this powerful tool and not permit countries such as China to take the lead in such innovation.

President Joe Biden expressed his concerns regarding the safety of their products prior to public release. Also, the Commerce Department declared its search for public opinion regarding new law enforcement measures.

Microsoft Corp and Alphabet Inc’s Google are significant investors of OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT. It is due to its potential that both software companies have been investing billions of dollars into its development, standing with them in the middle of a fierce competition between Silicon Valley tech firms. Schumer’s plan looks to provide the U.S. the opportunity to be the leader in the AI domain.
