Amazon Introduces Bedrock AI Platform to Compete With OpenAI

Date:

Amazon announced on Thursday its new AI platform called “Bedrock,” which is positioning itself to be a competitor to OpenAI in the generative AI space. The platform will offer a suite of tools that businesses using Amazon Web Services can utilize to build chatbots, generate text, and create and classify images. The move is further indication of CEO Andy Jassy’s commitment to invest heavily in AI and large language models (LLM).

Coda, an AI-document generation service used by companies such as Uber and the New York Times, is already making use of Bedrock to help scale their operations.

The release of Amazon’s Bedrock platform is one of the many steps big tech companies are taking to offer accessible generative AI tools. Microsoft and Google, two other industry giants, released their own versions of generative AI chatbots earlier this year.

The move comes after Jassy’s annual shareholder letter in which he indicated that LLMs and generative AI will be “transformative” and beneficial to Amazon’s customers and shareholders alike.

Andy Jassy has been the CEO of Amazon since April 2020 after Jeff Bezos stepped down. With Jassy at the helm, Amazon has been investing more into AI and LLMs. He firmly believes in the power of AI and its potential to be a game changer in the industry. As such, the newly-released Bedrock platform is a move to facilitate the development of AI tools and services.

So far, Amazon is offering the Bedrock toolkit to select AWS customers. The preview is part of Jassy’s considerable focus on AI and implies a significant investment from Amazon in the use of this technology. Bedrock appears to be the first of many AI-powered products from the company, in line with its mission to help businesses become more efficient.
