EU Privacy Watchdog Establishes ChatGPT Task Force

The European Union’s data privacy regulatory authority announced Thursday that it has created a task force to assist countries tackle the popular artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, by its US maker OpenAI. In response to privacy laws, Italy has temporarily prohibited the programme, while France’s regulator CNIL has opened a formal procedure after receiving five complaints.

Spain’s AEPD data protection agency has launched an inquiry into ChatGPT and its owner OpenAI for assessing whether the AI programme is compatible with personal rights and freedoms. ChatGPT is used for generating essays, poems and conversations from prompts, and has also demonstrated a capability to pass challenging tests.

However, it raises has concerns over replacing human workers and facilitating cheating in schools with its enormous accuracy. It is also associated with worries regarding OpenAI collecting data to train the AI. The French regulator CNIL has initiated a case following five complaints, which includes the one from MP Eric Bothorel, citing that ChatGPT made up his personal data, such as birth date and job history.

OpenAI has to fulfill certain prerequisites in Italy to gain clearance, including providing a legal validity for its data collection as well. The central regulator of the European Union, EDPB, formed the task force for fostering cooperation between countries over enforcing data protection regulations. OpenAI informed AFP that it is ensuring people’s privacy and ChatGPT is compliant with law.

OpenAI is a San Francisco-based technology company that uses AI application and techniques to pursue the goal of “discovering and enacting the path to safe artificial general intelligence”. OpenAI was initially founded by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Adam D’Angelo, Holden Karnofsky, Harry Cheung and Amir Salim, and gained substantial investor attention. OpenAI has since invested in research, development and technology related to artificial intelligence and robotics.
