Competing with Microsoft and Google: Amazon’s ChatGPT Tries to Reach Cloud Clients

Date:

Amazon is joining the race to capitalize on OpenAI’s popular ChatGPT technology, announcing technology to help its cloud customers and an AI marketplace. Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced two of its large-language models, Titan, which are designed to generate text, web search personalisation and have been trained on vast amounts of text to summarise content and write a draft of a blog or engage in open-ended questions.

However, the company does not plan to release a chatbot similar to those from Microsoft and Google. AWS Chief Adam Selipsky said customers asked them what they can do to help them with generative AI technology. He also mentioned that the in-house chips used by Amazon provide practical and cost-effective solutions and performance.

Generative AI is software that can create text, images, or video based on prompts from the users and this technology has gained the attention of Silicon Valley companies. Microsoft has integrated generative AI technology into its Bing internet search service and plans to deploy them across its other products, while Google has also started exploring similar options. Meta Platforms Inc has also released their own large-language model and similar work will expand across the company.

Amazon also announced a Bedrock service on AWS where developers can access the AI models made by other companies like AI21 Labs, Anthropic and Stability AI. These models have been trained with large amounts of text and can summarise content, write draft blog posts and answer open-ended questions. During a preview period that begins Thursday, AWS customers can apply to use the models and pricing hasn’t been settled yet. But Amazon’s in-house chips like Inferentia2 and Trainium can help customers to lower their costs in terms of machine learning work.

The company also mentioned that their large-language models are already used to help shoppers in their retail website and Alexa voice assistant. Swami Sivasubramanian, VP of AWS databases, ML and analytics said that Amazon has been investing in the generative AI space for a long time.

Apart from Amazon, Chinese AI firm SenseTime has also launched a ChatGPT rival in Shanghai. Amazon shares rose 4.6% to $ 102.31 at 3.42 pm in New York.

Amazon is a multinational technology company based in Seattle, Washington. It focuses on the e-commerce, cloud computing, digital streaming, artificial intelligence and other fields. Founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos, Amazon has become the largest online retailer in the world and it is considered one of the Big Four tech companies, alongside Google, Apple and Microsoft.

Adam Selipsky is an American executive and the current chief executive officer (CEO) of Amazon Web Services (AWS). He previously worked as the vice president of marketing, sales, and support at AWS, before becoming Vice President at Tableau Software Inc. in 2016. He returned to AWS in April 2020 as its new CEO, following the decision of former CEO Andy Jassy to take on the role of CEO at Amazon.
