Artificial intelligence (AI) is set to transform the diagnostic journey for millions of women suffering from endometriosis. Researchers from Australia and the U.K. are utilizing AI technology to analyze data from ultrasound and MRI scans, aiming to provide fast and noninvasive diagnoses for individuals with this painful and common reproductive disease.
Endometriosis occurs when sensitive tissue grows outside the uterus, leading to severe pelvic pain. The IMAGENDO system, developed by scientists at the Robinson Research Institute at the University of Adelaide in Australia in collaboration with the University of Surrey in the U.K., leverages machine learning to combine the diagnostic capabilities of pelvic ultrasound scans and MRI. By identifying endometriosis lesions, this innovative technology aims to optimize and validate the algorithm.
The traditional diagnosis process for endometriosis is often lengthy, taking an average of six years. This prolonged period can result in anxiety, depression, and fatigue for patients. Without a reliable noninvasive test, keyhole surgery may be necessary to visualize endometrial deposits within the abdomen, often confirmed through microscopic examination of the tissue.
