OpenAI, the renowned artificial intelligence research lab, has made headlines with the launch of its groundbreaking cryptocurrency startup called Worldcoin. The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, unveiled this audacious venture in San Francisco on July 24th. The aim of Worldcoin is to find a reliable solution to distinguish humans from AI online, facilitate global democratic processes, and significantly increase economic opportunities.
In a blogpost, Alex Blania and Sam Altman, the founders of Worldcoin, expressed their belief that the project has the potential to bring about a paradigm shift by offering increased economic opportunities while upholding privacy. They also mentioned that the ultimate goal is to explore the potential of AI-funded Universal Basic Income (UBI).
Worldcoin comprises two main elements: a privacy-preserving digital identity known as World ID, and a digital currency called WLD. Individuals will be rewarded with WLD simply for being human, provided they reside in a jurisdiction where it is permissible. In cases where regulations are less clear, efforts will be made to ensure more people can benefit from the World ID and digital currency.
To get started with Worldcoin, users can download the World App, which is the first protocol-compatible wallet. By visiting an Orb, a biometric verification device, users can acquire their World ID. This innovative approach enables individuals to establish their unique identity online while maintaining complete privacy.
As the distribution of Orbs intensifies globally, users can locate the nearest one and schedule an appointment for verification via the World App or on Worldcoin’s official website. Additionally, the company has begun rolling out 1,500 Orbs to meet the growing demand for World ID. This summer, these new Orbs will be introduced in over 35 cities worldwide, allowing millions of additional individuals to join the existing two million who have already signed up for World ID.
Worldcoin highlighted that the expansion to 1,500 Orbs represents a five-fold increase in sign-up capacity worldwide. The deployment of Orbs in various cities across five continents, including India, will continue until the end of 2023.
With its grand ambitions, Worldcoin aims to revolutionize the way humans interact with AI online, foster global democratic processes, and create new economic opportunities. While the project holds great potential, it is crucial to consider different perspectives and opinions to ensure a balanced view of this groundbreaking endeavor. Only time will tell if Worldcoin can deliver on its promises and pave the way for a future where AI-funded UBI becomes a reality.
