Google launches limited version of AI-powered note-taking app NotebookLM.

Google has announced a limited launch of its AI-assisted note-taking app, renaming it from Project Tailwind to NotebookLM. The app is designed to help students organize their lecture notes and other documents accumulated during coursework. Unlike generic chatbots that rely on unrelated information, NotebookLM analyzes and answers questions based on the specific documents it is fed. It first consults the user’s notes and supporting documents, but can also fetch additional information if needed. This source-grounding feature aims to reduce the invention of counterfactual information, although Google advises users to fact-check the AI’s responses. While NotebookLM is still considered an experimental product, Google aims to gather feedback to improve its usability. Other companies, such as Notion, are also exploring ways to incorporate AI into their existing products. To ensure the success of NotebookLM, Google will listen to user feedback and make necessary improvements. The company hopes that NotebookLM will not end up in the Google Graveyard like previous experiments.
