Mercedes-Benz has partnered with Microsoft to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its automotive operating system. The German car maker is using the Azure OpenAI platform to add ChatGPT, an AI-based conversational robot, to its infotainment system. The beta version of the program rolls out on Friday and will run for three months for select American customers. During this period, Mercedes will gauge drivers’ interactions with the technology to refine its functions. ChatGPT will expand the responses of the onboard assistant and allow drivers and passengers to hold natural conversations with the system in the car. Microsoft is exploring voice commands to make restaurant reservations, buy movie tickets or perform other tasks through the platform. Mercedes owners will be able to download ChatGPT via the brand app or voice commands, and the technology will be compatible with the company’s MBUX infotainment system, used in 900,000 vehicles. The conversations will be analysed and anonymised in the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud.
