Two lawyers have been fined $5,000 for submitting a brief in an airline injury case that featured made-up legal precedents generated by an AI chatbot called ChatGPT. Steven A Schwartz and Peter LoDuca, working for New York-based firm Levidow, Levidow & Oberman, stood by their submission even after it was highlighted as fake by opposing counsel. Both eventually apologised to the court. Judge Kevin Castel said in his sanction order that AI had potential uses in the legal industry, however, good lawyers appropriately obtain assistance from junior lawyers, law students, contract lawyers, legal encyclopedias and databases such as Westlaw and LexisNexis.Â
