A US lawyer has been fined $5,000 for submitting a legal document written by an AI chatbot called ChatGPT. The case was brought against Colombian airline Avianca but the citations given by ChatGPT were fake, leading to the sanction. In addition to the fine, the lawyer was ordered to notify judges falsely identified as authors of the bogus case rulings about the sanction. A separate order granted Avianca’s request to dismiss a lawsuit on behalf of Roberto Mata, who claimed a metal service tray hit his knee during a 2019 flight from El Salvador to New York, seriously injuring him. The passengers were then represented by ChatGPT and the citations used were found to be non-existent, resulting in the lawyer being sanctioned.
