Portugal is planning to test an AI system to take emergency calls using OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT. During busy periods, callers currently have to wait around five to six minutes to receive a response from human dispatchers. The AI system will be the first point of contact for the 112 emergency line, helping to ease the load on police dispatchers. The system will respond to calls with natural language processing to assess the type of problem raised. Deputy Secretary General of the Internal Administration, António Pombeiro said that the AI system won’t be replacing human dispatchers but is optimistic that it could be rolled out by 2025 if the pilot goes well. The system is set to undergo significant testing before implementation. ChatGPT was released in November 2022 and can hold casual written conversations and scrape data from the internet, making it useful in a number of professions, including legal.
