Meta Expert Criticizes Outdated ChatGPT-Style AI Technology

Yann LeCunn, the chief scientist for Facebook-owner Meta, has announced that generative AI, the technology which powers ChatGPT, has reached a dead end and new AI resembling human rationality will replace it. At a Meta launch event in Paris, LeCunn explained that humans possess common sense, while machines do not. Meta’s newest project, image-based Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture (JEPA), aims to move beyond ChatGPT-like generative AI and give machines the ability to conceptualize abstract ideas. LeCunn believes the fears and excitement surrounding generative AI grossly inflate its actual capabilities. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, announced that the JEPA tool would be open-source, available to researchers to experiment with. Compared to its rivals, Meta has taken a more discrete approach to ChatGPT-style AI for Facebook and Instagram. However, the company infused generative AI in its products without the same publicity as Microsoft or Google. In parallel, it has also released open-source AI models that require less computing power than ChatGPT technology.
