One Third of Businesses Guilty of Covering Up Data Breaches

Date:

With the rise of cyber crime, organizations are under immense pressure to remain proactive in their battle against hacking, malware and other malicious attacks. This pressure is causing companies to attempt to keep data breaches hidden, in order to avoid the legal and financial fees associated with them.

Bitdefender, a provider of cybersecurity solutions, conducted a survey of over 400 security and IT professionals working at companies of 1,000 or more employees. The study revealed that a shocking 42 % of respondents had been instructed to conceal data breaches and 29.9% admitted they kept a breach secret rather than reporting it as they should have. Furthermore, the FTC recently fined former Uber CSO Joseph Sullivan for trying to keep a 2016 attack under wraps.

These results show just how serious the problem has become, with over half of all organizations having experienced a cyberattack in the past year. Respondents expressed their greatest concern over software vulnerabilities and zero days, phishing and social engineering, supply chain attacks, ransomware, and insider threats.

Seeing as avoiding these cyber incidents can be a challenge, cyber security leaders can lessen the possibility of deceit by investing in preventive and detection solutions that allow organizations to respond to security issues faster, reducing the occurrence of legal and financial consequences.

Bitdefender provides total cyber security solutions that cover all organizations with various options. The company is aimed to make protection easier by automating and unifying cyber security strategy throughout organizations to protect from breaches.

Andrei Florescu, Deputy General Manager and Senior Vice President of Products at Bitdefender Business Solutions Group, acknowledges that organizations are under tremendous pressure to keep safe from cyber threats and how it has become increasingly complex for them to extend their security measures. He encourages investing in advanced threat prevention, detection and resolution to reduce the risk and burden of manual security operations.
