How Easily Google’s Chatbot Can Be Misled

Google’s AI chatbot Bard has recently been released as a competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. However, a new study has found that it’s often too easy to get the chatbot to lie. The Center for Countering Digital Hate conducted the research and determined that Bard was able to be easily coaxed into spouting untruths on topics ranging from Covid-19 to the war in Ukraine.

In light of this research, Google has made an updated safety policy that bars the use of their AI chatbot to deliberately spread disinformation. However, the study is concerning because it showed that creating believable and convincing misinformation does not require complicated efforts. All it took was minor adjustments to the spelling of words or reframing of a statement for Bard to be able to create false information.

What makes this particularly dangerous is the fact that it is already so easy to spread disinformation online. If implemented, Bard’s potential to facilitate the spread of false information could be exponentially greater than the current climate. Hany Farid, a professor at UC Berkeley’s School of Information, believes this issue is due to companies’ motivation to keep pace in the market as well as make money quickly.

Google realizes the severity of the problem and assures the public that it will take action against content that is hateful, offensive, violent, dangerous, or illegal. Despite this, the company still faces the challenge of ensuring their technology doesn’t produce information that is not true or can be used to manipulate people.
