Microsoft is relocating some of its top artificial intelligence (AI) researchers from China to Vancouver, Canada, according to sources cited by the Financial Times. The new research lab will be linked with Microsoft’s Research Asia (MSRA) headquarters in Beijing to promote collaboration with the team in Vancouver. Researchers from other labs worldwide will also staff the lab, including those from China. MSRA has reportedly started applying for visas to allow Beijing-based researchers to relocate to the new institute. Despite tensions between China and Canada, the decision to put the new AI lab there is expected to boost Canada’s AI status and start an AI-infused business ecosystem. Microsoft’s move to Vancouver is seen to follow Google and Amazon’s decision to bypass China and come to Canada.
