ChatGPT: When Artificial Intelligence Tries to Be Funny

Date:

ChatGPT-3.5, an artificial intelligence (AI) model developed by OpenAI, has been tested for its humor capabilities by researchers Sophie Jentzsch and Kristian Kersting from the Institute for Software Technology, German Aerospace Center and Technical University Darmstadt. Unfortunately, the results of the study were not exactly hilarious.

Jentzsch and Kersting tested the AI model‘s ability to come up with jokes, explanations, and detection without access to the model’s inner workings or data set. They found that during a test run, over 90% of the 1,008 generated jokes were the same 25 jokes, indicating that ChatGPT had memorized these jokes during training instead of generating new ones.

Despite its limitations in joke generation and explanation, however, ChatGPT’s focus on content and meaning indicates progress towards a better understanding of humor in language models. The researchers stated that These qualities can be exploited to boost computational humor applications.

While it’s clear that ChatGPT’s version of humor is still somewhat limited, its ability to understand stylistic elements like wordplay and double meanings is encouraging. Hopefully, as researchers continue to develop and improve AI language models, machines will become better at creating and understanding jokes that truly make us laugh.
