A Lutheran church service in Germany was led almost entirely by artificial intelligence (AI) for the first time. ChatGPT, a chatbot with a bearded black avatar projected on a large screen, delivered the sermon to hundreds of worshippers at St. Paul’s in Fuerth. The 40-minute service, including music and prayers, was developed by Jonas Simmerlein, a philosopher and theologian, and ChatGPT. Four different avatars led the service, with some of the AI-generated comments receiving laughs from the congregation. However, some attendees were critical of the absence of “heart and soul” or emotion and spirituality in the machine-led worship.
