Lawyer Utilizes ChatGPT to Prepare Lawsuit in the United States

Date:

New York lawyer Steven Schwartz has apologized in court after using an artificial intelligence program to prepare a civil lawsuit. Schwartz utilized the conversational robot ChatGPT, created by OpenAI, to generate content for a lawsuit against Colombian airline Avianca. His client, Roberto Mata, claimed to have been injured during a flight in August 2019. However, during legal proceedings, files Schwartz submitted which cited court precedents were discovered to be false, with fictitious cases and quotes included. Schwartz apologized, admitting he had no idea ChatGPT was capable of fabricating cases, adding that it was not his intention to deceive the court. The lawyer also stated that the case had brought ridicule to his office, since its publication in the New York Times.
