Lawyer Blames AI for Fake Legal Cases Used in Court, but Judge Questions His Competency

Date:

A lawyer has admitted to being duped by an AI tool after unknowingly using fabricated legal cases in court. Steven Schwartz, who works at personal injury law firm Levidow, Levidow & Oberman, used the AI tool ChatGPT to write up an affidavit for a lawsuit brought by a man who claimed he was hurt by a serving cart on a flight. The court filing included six cases which turned out to be bogus judicial decisions with bogus quotes and bogus internal citations. A judge in the US District Court in New York questioned how Schwartz missed this and suggested ChatGPT‘s output was legal gibberish. The hearing concluded without a decision on possible sanctions for the lawyers.
