Sam Altman discusses AI regulation with PM Modi

Date:

Sam Altman, the inventor of chatbot GPT, recently met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the downside and regulation of artificial intelligence (AI). Altman addressed a group of students at Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology in Delhi, India, saying that AI adoption in India has been impressive and transformational, and those who embrace it will be rewarded.

Concerns about the environmental impact of AI models were brought up during the discussion, and Altman shared that his company, ChatGPT, has envisioned net-zero cooling for their AI system with a transition to renewable energy sources. He also expressed confidence that fusion energy will be working in the next few years, which will help the transition to clean energy systems.

Altman is working on a mission to build safer Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and has found success in language models. Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) and scaling laws have also been helpful in the company’s advancements.

When asked about regulations and whether he would consider pausing development for regulations to catch up, Altman thinks that halting progress is not a good idea, adding that many insights on how to make systems safer come from working with the latest models. Instead, rigorous evaluations of development models are more effective.

Lastly, Altman noted his desire to fund startups in India and the area of education is where his company is excited about making an impact. He is also looking forward to working with India on education initiatives.
