OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has given an update on the progress of ChatGPT, the AI chatbot he created. According to Altman, the company is not currently training GPT5, the successor to GPT4, as he believes there is a lot of work needed before it can be developed. While he did say they were working on new ideas for the next model, Altman admitted they were “nowhere close to the start”, adding that safety audits were needed before the next ChatGPT model could be worked on. Altman’s comments reflect concerns about the pace of AI development. In March, a group of AI researchers and business leaders wrote an open letter asking for a pause in training AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months.
