Radio Host Sues ChatGPT Developer for Allegedly Making Defamatory Statements

Date:

A radio host has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, an artificial intelligence (AI) company, over allegations of libel. Mark Walters claims that the statements made by OpenAI’s large language model, ChatGPT, were false and malicious. The AI software was sued for allegedly claiming that Walters was accused of defrauding and embezzling money from the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF). In reality, Walters does not have any employment or official relationship with SAF, according to the lawsuit filed in the Georgia state court. Walters is seeking unspecified damages to be determined in court. Legal experts believe that the outcome of this case is uncertain because Walters must prove that OpenAI’s team knew that the information was false or had reckless disregard for the truth, as well as actual malice for ChatGPT’s actions to be deemed libel. There is no easy solution to the growing problem of AI-generated defamation as it presents its own challenges and entails a great deal of technical knowledge about large language models, as well as defamation law precedent.
