A group of hackers has found a way to access OpenAI’s GPT-4 language models by stealing API keys from valid users. These keys permit access to OpenAI’s cutting-edge artificial intelligence tools that can be used to build language models and software applications. The process starts with users signing up for accounts with OpenAI and associating a credit card with them. OpenAI provides users with unique API keys to access its GPT-4 models, charging for usage based on the fees. Sharing these keys is a violation of OpenAI’s terms of service and can result in unauthorized and uncompensated access to the models. A hacker gained access to an OpenAI account that permitted up to $150,000 worth of usage and is doling out the account’s access to others at no cost via a Discord server and website. More than 500 people have already joined the Discord server, according to reports. Since the API keys are commercial secrets, sharing them online can lead to potentially disastrous financial repercussions.
