Apple CEO Tim Cook discusses ChatGPT and AI Regulation with Times of India

Date:

Apple CEO Tim Cook recently spoke about the company’s stance on artificial intelligence (AI) technology and its regulation. Although Apple executives did not use the term AI during a presentation at the Worldwide Developers Conference in 2023, Cook says that Apple currently integrates AI into its products. However, he believes that the general public does not necessarily recognize these features as AI.

During an interview with news publication ABC, Cook revealed that he uses the AI chatbot, ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI. He is excited about the unique applications of ChatGPT and claims that Apple is closely observing the tool’s development.

At the conference, Apple announced a series of updates and features for their iPhone, iPad, and Mac products. Some of these features are powered by machine learning, such as autocorrect and dictation in messaging, as well as comprehensive facial recognition features that identify friends, family, and pets in photos.

Cook, however, is cautious about the potential dangers of AI. He feels that large language models demonstrate great promise but can also lead to the spread of biases and misinformation. Cook has stressed the need for companies in the AI industry to regulate themselves, claiming that the pace of progress in AI research may outstrip the ability of regulators to keep up.

While regulation is necessary, it may not be enough to prevent harm, and companies must take responsibility for their own ethical decisions. Regulation will have a difficult time staying even with the progress on this because it’s moving so quickly. So I think it’s incumbent on companies as well to regulate themselves, Cook said.

As AI technology continues to evolve and become more ingrained in our daily lives, it is crucial that governments and companies work together to develop ethical guidelines and ensure the safety of those using and affected by these advancements.
