EU Official Urges Instagram, Google, and TikTok to Warn Users and Build Safeguards Against AI-Generated Content

Social media giants Instagram, Google, and TikTok have been urged by a European Union official to warn their users about AI-generated content and build safeguards against it. Vera Jourova, European Commission Vice President, suggested that those companies incorporate “clearly labeled” services that could spread AI-generated disinformation as part of the EU’s code of practice on disinformation. While AI technology can have positive impacts, it also raises new challenges in the fight against disinformation, Jourova said. She called for companies using generative AI to make necessary safeguards to prevent malicious actors from using their services to generate disinformation. The code of practice on disinformation is voluntary, but experts predict that it can help social media companies comply with the Digital Services Act. Twitter withdrew from the code last month, provoking European officials, who will closely scrutinize its actions and compliance with EU law.
